Optometry digital facilitator focused on improving the use of technology

Summary

The new role will help optometrists make better use of digital systems, improve patient care, and provide a link between localities and the wider system

A new digital facilitator will help Greater Manchester optometry practices make the most of workplace technology.

Usman Rasul, an experienced optometrist, has been appointed as part of the Optometry Excellence Programme, which is funded by the Greater Manchester Optometry Provider Board (OPB) and supported by Greater Manchester Local Optical Committees (GM LOCs).

He will support optometry practices to make better use of digital systems and processes, including helping them to adopt and use digital referral tools, supporting the workforce to improve their digital skills, identifying barriers and opportunities within primary care, and providing a link between practices and wider digital transformation initiatives.

Usman will work across all 10 localities, driving digital change from the ground up and in line with the Greater Manchester Primary Care Blueprint priorities.

The Optometry Excellence Programme supports practices to strive for excellence through a range of quality improvement initiatives.

There are four workstreams, which are being rolled out in a phased way:

  • Rescue and resilience
  • Optometry referrals improvement programme
  • Practical support
  • Sustainability in optometry practice

The digital facilitator role is within the remit of the referrals improvement programme and aims to bridge the gap between system policy and the day-to-day clinical reality, to drive meaningful and sustainable digital adoption that benefits patients and clinicians.

Usman said: “This is an exciting opportunity to join a team that is passionate about using technology to improve healthcare delivery and outcomes.

“I am keen to make a tangible difference in local eyecare through digitally-led innovation, and my insight into day-to-day challenges in optometry gives me a unique and practical viewpoint on where digital tools can add value.”

Usman is getting to know his local stakeholders, including individual practices and practitioners, Local Optical Committees and Primary Eyecare Services.
