Youth Smoking & Vaping: Guidance for Dental Practitioners (2026)
This training video equips practitioners with a clear understanding of the prevalence, patterns and drivers of smoking and vaping among children and young people, including commonly used products and behaviours. It clarified the distinction between vaping as a harm reduction tool for adult smokers and the specific risks associated with youth vaping, particularly nicotine dependence.
Practitioners can also develop an awareness of the differences between legal and illicit vapes, including the heightened risks linked to illegal substances.
The training provides insight into how nicotine affects the developing brain and body. It includes the current available evidence on the oral health impacts of smoking and vaping in young people, including emerging risks and areas of uncertainty.
The training also supports practitioners to deliver brief, age-appropriate harm reduction and safety advice in clinical settings and confidently signpost individuals and families to appropriate local and national support services where there are concerns about smoking, vaping, nicotine use or wider vulnerabilities.
Presenters:
- Amy Warburton (Vaping Lead, CGL Eclypse)
- Alice Causer (Academic Clinical Fellow, Community Dental Services)
