Latest opportunities to get involved in clinical research

Summary

Studies are available on low back pain, uncontrolled hypertension, and quality of life after cancer treatment.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) North West Regional Research Delivery Network (NW RRDN) is promoting three clinical research studies.

INDIGO Community study

The INDIGO Community study is available to all practices in Greater Manchester. The study uses questionnaires to help understand how a patient feels about their quality of life and experiences of care.

Using a digital survey tool, the study hopes to run a project that will help understand more about the lives of patients after treatment for cancer.

It aims to see which patient-reported outcome measures allow participants to express their quality of life as rated by them. The study will also explore how to keep the amount of time and effort needed to complete the questionnaires as low as possible.

Behaviour change to rEduce LOW back pain (BELOW) feasibility study

The ‘Behaviour change to rEduce LOW back pain’ (BELOW) feasibility study is looking for GP practices in Bolton.

The current NHS treatment for people with low back pain (LBP) who are at high risk of long-term problematic symptoms involves a combination of physical exercises and psychological methods.

However, the effectiveness of this combined approach is not very strong, partly because many patients prefer physical treatments and are hesitant to engage with the psychological aspects.

Additionally, some musculoskeletal physiotherapists believe that current combined treatments lack sufficient ‘hands-on’ guidance.

The study will recruit patients with ongoing low back pain (LBP) who would be considered at high risk of poor long-term outcome.

Once recruited, patients will be randomised into an intervention group who will receive the Cognitive Muscular Therapy intervention and a control group receiving best practice psychologically informed physiotherapy.

NATRIX-SBP clinical trial

NATRIX-SBP is a new clinical trial seeking to recruit Bury practices with patients who have uncontrolled hypertension – high blood pressure despite being on one or more antihypertensive drugs – to help investigate whether the study drug is effective in lowering blood pressure.

NATRIX-SBP is available in EMIS-X via Recruit, which enables primary care teams to easily identify and contact eligible patients for clinical trials, support clinical research and offer more patients across the country an opportunity to take part in research studies.

Please go into EMIS Recruit and review the details for NATRIX-SBP if you are interested.
