A new group of leaders in general practice received a glowing endorsement from the regional director of primary care.
Dr Paula Cowan joined the new team of peer ambassadors as they started their journey of quality improvement across Greater Manchester.
A total of 11 peer ambassadors are being recruited to support practices through the transformation of primary care.
The scheme is being run by Greater Manchester Primary Care Provider Board (PCB), in partnership with NHS GM, and is an extension of a national peer ambassador programme launched last year.
Dr Cowan, the North West Region Director for Primary Care at NHS England, joined many of the new recruits – who are all serving GPs – at their recent away day and launch event.
She said: “It was an absolute pleasure to be part of the Greater Manchester Peer Ambassadors away day.
“I was genuinely inspired by the energy, commitment, and talent in the room. This group of emerging leaders is clearly passionate about making a difference, and it was exciting to see them engaging so thoughtfully with quality improvement, leadership and data.
“I left the day feeling optimistic about the future of general practice in our region.”
Each locality in Greater Manchester will have its own peer ambassador, responsible for leading Quality Improvement, providing peer support, and encouraging collaboration across general practice as they embed the Modern General Practice (MGP) model.
They will engage with other GPs, practice managers, and existing networks to share expertise and best practice, and offer coaching and support.
The launch event introduced them to Quality Improvement tools and ways to embed a culture of improvement in localities, and they will meet regularly to develop their skills and learn from each other.
Dr Preeti Adma, a GP Partner and Bolton’s peer ambassador, said: “I enjoy bringing people together and turning ideas into practical improvements. For me, being a peer ambassador is about encouragement, collaboration, and making transformation feel achievable and worthwhile for every practice.”
Dr Caitlin Greaves, GP and a peer ambassador in Trafford, added: “I am excited to start as a peer ambassador for Trafford and hope to promote quality improvement and shared learning in modern general practice across the locality in this role.”
The peer ambassador scheme runs until September 2026.
