Diabetic Eye Screening insights project webinar

Summary

Are you looking to improve Diabetic Eye Screening (DES) uptake among 20-40 year olds living in deprived areas?

The National Vaccination and Screening Health Inequalities team has recently commissioned an insights project to better understand why people aged 20-40 years are less likely to attend their Diabetic Eye Screening (DES).

They will share the latest results and recommendations in a webinar from 3:30pm to 4:30pm on Thursday 27 March, 2025.

Researchers have interviewed and surveyed over 110 patients and service providers to gain a better understanding about the key barriers and enablers that people aged 20-40 years with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes (T1D and T2D), living in deprived areas, encounter in relation to attending their DES appointments and accessing DES services in England.

The speaker will be Michelle Lloyd, Managing Director, Solutions Research.

This webinar is designed for DES providers and commissioners, diabetes health professionals, and anyone interested in improving the uptake of the Diabetes Annual Care Processes, as well as NHSE regional colleagues, systems, and ICB colleagues.

Background:

Diabetic retinopathy can affect people with diabetes, and Diabetic Eye Screening (DES) is the most effective tool for managing and reducing the risk of sight loss due to diabetes.

Uptake rates are lower among people aged 20-40 years, yet they are more likely to be diagnosed with sight-threatening retinopathy when they do present.

People from deprived areas and minority ethnic groups have the highest rates of non-attendance – 20-24 per cent of the total T1D and T2D population (all ages) live in the most deprived areas.

This is compounded by increasing rates of T2D among young people, which is more aggressive and has a higher prevalence among deprived communities and minority ethnic groups.

Most people with T2D under 40 years are from deprived areas, and over 70 per cent are obese.
