Summary
The NIHR capital investment funding scheme is now open, along with the chance to apply for a fellowship via the School for Primary Care Research (SPCR).
Primary care organisations still have time to apply for National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) capital investment funding before the deadline of 1pm on 14 May.
The NIHR’s funding opportunity is open to all NHS organisations in England, and aims to strengthen research infrastructure with a specific emphasis on enhancing primary care capabilities.
Up to £60m is being made available to pay for cutting-edge equipment, associated building refurbishment, and modular buildings to enhance NHS organisations’ ability to carry out innovative research. For the first time, £10m has been ring-fenced for primary care organisations.
The focus is on ensuring that NHS organisations are well-equipped to meet the needs of industry, to enhance the UK’s reputation for delivering world-class commercial research.
Applicants from primary care settings where there is significant potential for growth in research capacity are encouraged.
This scheme responds to the government’s missions for growth and health, including the need to push treatment, care and research from hospital to the community.
It is being funded in partnership with the pharmaceutical industry’s Voluntary Scheme for Branded Medicines Pricing, Access and Growth (VPAG) Investment Programme.

If you’re still in the early stages of your clinical research journey, the NIHR School for Primary Care Research (SPCR) has up to eleven General Practice Commercial Research Fellowships available, with positions available at various universities across the UK.
These fellowships are designed to foster collaboration between general practitioners and key research partners, including the NIHR Research Delivery Network and NIHR Commercial Research Delivery Centres.
More information about this opportunity is available on the SPCR website.
