Leading the way in good employment practice

Hawkley Brook Medical Practice is the first health and care organisation to achieve member status of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter.

The Wigan practice has today been announced among eight new members by the Leader of Manchester City Council, Bev Craig. In a short video, she expressed her appreciation to all supporters and members of the charter for their commitment to good employment practices, despite the challenges of the past year.

Dr Nikesh Vallabh, Partner at Hawkley Brook Medical Practice, said: “We are extremely proud to be the first healthcare organisation in Greater Manchester to be a member of the Good Employment Charter.

“Being an excellent general practice is about looking after our practice team as well as our patients. The Good Employment Charter articulates a set of standards that we have made a strong commitment to and can hold ourselves accountable against as a practice. We hope this will inspire other organisations in health and care to do follow suit in becoming members of the charter.

“We look forward to working with other organisations, including those outside the healthcare setting, to share learning, innovation and best practice as part of the Good Employment Charter community.”

To progress from supporter to member, employers must undergo an assessment and technical panel review to ensure they meet the charter’s seven characteristics of good employment. The charter’s goal is to improve employment standards throughout Greater Manchester and contribute to a thriving economy. Employers can start their journey with the charter as a supporter, with resources and support available to help them improve their practices.

Janet Crofts, Managing Director at Greater Manchester Primary Care Provider Board, said: “This is a great initiative which really helps share good practice and demonstrates how much our staff are valued. The Primary Care Provider Board would like to congratulate Hawkley Brook Medical Practice on their success.”
