Greater Manchester General Practice Provider Board (GPB) welcomes a new chair in Dr Tim Dalton.

Tim takes over the role from Dr Tracey Vell who has been chair since the inception of the GPB eight years ago.

A practising GP in Wigan since 2000, Tim has extensive leadership experience having chaired the former Wigan Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) for 10 years and co-chairing the Healthier Wigan Locality Board.

Tim has a passion for supporting all parts of general practice. He is committed to driving quality improvement for patients and is a champion for training among his colleagues, having turned his own surgery from a single-handed practice to an award winning, four partner training surgery.

As well as his work to date at locality level, Tim recognises the importance of representing general practice in the wider context of primary care and on a regional scale. As such, he is currently an associate medical director across Greater Manchester and ideally positioned to take up the role of GPB chair.

He said: “The experience of us all is that every day general practice has never felt so under pressure of demand and scrutiny, never had so many storms to weather in such quick succession, while never facing so much uncertainty about the future. Despite this, we have never delivered so many quality outcomes for our local patients and residents with the limited resources and staffing available.

“A population health system needs an empowered, resilient and vibrant general practice to achieve the collective aims of our integrated care partnership, and the Greater Manchester GP Provider Board will be a key part of achieving that aim.

“I’d like to express my thanks for the honour of being appointed chair of the Greater Manchester GP Provider Board and I look forward to working with all parts of general practice across our city region, along with our colleagues both in the other primary care disciplines and across our broader integrated care system.”

Outgoing chair, Dr Tracey Vell, said: “After eight years of creating and chairing GMGPB I am delighted to hand the reins to Dr Tim Dalton whilst continuing to support as chief officer of the Greater Manchester Primary Care Provider Board. Tim has a background in all areas of general practice, and we will all benefit from his leadership.”

As part of his role as chair, Tim will represent general practice on Greater Manchester Primary Care Provider Board (PCB) alongside representatives from the other primary care disciplines of community pharmacy, dentistry and optometry.
