Primary care leadership programme produces positive results

Summary

General practice colleagues feel better equipped to navigate their teams through the changing landscape of primary care.

Participants of a primary care leadership programme have ‘graduated’ with an increased sense of job satisfaction, motivation and confidence in their roles.

Around 30 people took part in the ‘Leading Teams Through Change’ programme, delivered by Greater Manchester Primary Care Provider Board (PCB) in partnership with NHS Confederation.

The programme ran from November 2024 to April 2025, and included four full-day, in-person events plus additional support via online sessions.

It was open to general practice clinicians and managers in positions that enable them to influence and implement change within their practice or neighbourhood. This included GPs, nurses, practice managers, PCN managers and those in Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme (ARRS) positions.

The aim was to support colleagues to develop their leadership skills within the complex, changing landscape of primary care and the wider context of the integrated care system.

Course content included:

  • Foundations of change leadership – adaptability of personal leadership styles to enhance team dynamics
  • Reflection and adapting personal leadership styles for impact – demonstrating growth in self-awareness and leadership behaviours, using personality assessment tools like the Hogan Profile
  • Collaboration and navigating conflict within team working – enhancing effective team working and leadership
  • Change and co-production in communities – leading and co-producing change, engagement and collaboration in local communities

A total of 29 colleagues, from an initial cohort of 35, completed the programme which consisted of group discussions, table work, action learning sets and role play.

Participants were highly positive about the content and said they would recommend the programme to others. Some said they would have preferred more time for discussions and further coaching sessions.

Everyone agreed that the programme had helped them to develop critical thinking skills about leadership of change and identify their own personal development areas.
