Primary care providers invited to clinical research meeting

Summary

Chance to network and learn more about the new NW research delivery network.

Colleagues interested in clinical research are invited to attend the final primary care meeting of the year by the North West Regional Research Delivery Network (formerly known as NIHR CRN).

You’re invited to complete the registration form and indicate if you plan to attend in person or virtually.

The meeting will take place on Wednesday, 23 October from 10am at Citylabs 1.0, Nelson Street, Manchester. It should last around one and a half hours, plus networking time afterwards.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research Clinical Research Network (NIHR CRN) changed its name and merged with the North West Coast branch at the start of October.

It now covers the Integrated Care Systems of Cheshire and Merseyside, Greater Manchester, and Lancashire and South Cumbria, to become the North West Regional Research Delivery Network (NW RRDN).

A recent article in the British Journal of General Practice, Impact of research activity on performance of general practices: a qualitative study, revealed a positive impact on practice performance among GP practices that conduct research.

The NIHR Research Delivery Network’s current research offers are as follows:

IRIS+ – GP practices in Bolton are invited to take part in the IRIS+ clinical trial. The University of Bristol, together with IRISi, is aiming to broaden the IRIS Programme to men, children and young people, widening the domestic violence support GPs can provide to the whole family.

The trial will help establish the effectiveness of this new programme.

Recruited practices will be randomly selected to either continue to run normal IRIS, or to access the new IRIS+ intervention. This includes a free brief IRIS+ clinical domestic violence training session in referring men, children and young people, free access to the expanded referral pathway to all patients, IRIS+ online clinical resources, and free IRIS+ Advocate Educator support.

Joining the study means the team can access your referral data via the local DVA agency and using NHS digital data – there is no additional work for the practice.

Express your interest in the study via the online form.

EMIS Recruit – The Recruit solution from EMIS bridges the gap between patients, healthcare teams and researchers by enabling primary care teams to easily support clinical trial recruitment directly within their clinical system.

Recruit delivers complex pre-built searches against primary care Electronic Health Record (EHR) data to identify patients who may meet eligibility criteria for clinical trials.

With just a few clicks, primary care teams can review the generated list and invite patients to register their interest via text or email. Patients can then choose to participate, with no data shared with the research organisation until consent is given.

Skills for Adolescent WELLbeing (SWELL) – The aim of the study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a preventive psychological intervention involving a weekly online CBT group for adolescents (aged 13-19) at elevated risk of depression.

As parental depression may reduce the effectiveness of CBT interventions for depression in young people, this study will also involve the trial team offering treatment optimisation for parents who are depressed at the start of the trial.

INDIGO Community – The study uses questionnaires to help understand how a patient feels about their quality of life and experiences of care. Using a digital survey tool, the study hopes to run a project that will help understand more about the lives of patients after treatment for cancer. They plan to see which patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS) allow participants to express their quality of life, as rated by the participants. The study will also explore how to keep the amount of time and effort needed to complete the questionnaires as low as possible.
