Resources to help optometry providers become more sustainable

Summary

A new dedicated section of the PCB website has been launched to support optometry practices with sustainability.

The new sustainability in optometry website page aims to help optometry providers consider ways to make their practice more sustainable.

Practices can find information about the benefits of creating a sustainability policy, with links to a number of resources to help practices create their own policy, including a sample policy template.

The new website page also provides simple, cost-effective tips to help practices to get started on their sustainability journey by focusing on one or two areas. These cover travel for staff and patients, energy consumption, waste recycling and production and recycling of frames and accessories.

Additionally, practices can learn more by watching a video from Simon Berry, an optometrist in Durham, who has made a number of sustainable changes to his practice.

Finally, the page provides information about other areas of support, including the Eyes on Sustainability conference taking place on 6 October, 2025, at the National Space Centre in Leicester. The conference brings together experts and companies from various fields within the eye care sector to discuss sustainability in optics.

Sustainability is a key part of the GM Optometry Excellence Programme helping to support sustainable optometry for the future.
