Updates from the world of clinical research

Summary

Opportunities for practices and patients to get involved.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is on a mission to involve more members of the public in health and care research.

It is looking for support from general practice for its flagship campaign, Be Part of Research.

Practices can order free leaflets and posters from the online NIHR shop, and display them in patient-facing areas, as well as download a video for use on screens.

The campaign encourages people to sign up for updates about research studies relevant and local to them.

If your practice wants to get directly involved with clinical research, the North West Regional Research Delivery Network (NW RRDN) of the NIHR has several opportunities available:

  • ATTITUDES-W – The study team at the University of Manchester would like GPs to promote its study into women’s experiences of weight stigma and discussions about weight in gynaecology settings. You can help by displaying a poster which invites women aged 18 or over, who have attended an appointment in a gynaecology department, to complete a questionnaire. The study will generate quantitative and qualitative data to understand barriers and opportunities for weight management conversations in gynaecology.
  • RESTORE – This study aims to assess the effectiveness of an online, home-based group rehabilitation programme to support long-term physical and mental health recovery (ReSTORe) compared to usual care, for people with mild to moderate disability, following hospital discharge after a stroke. You can support the study by displaying the RESTORE self-referral poster in practice.
  • EXTOD-ActiveThis study explores the effect of interrupting sitting with regular active breaks on glycaemia and daily insulin dose in sedentary people with type 1 diabetes. Participants will complete pre-randomisation baseline procedures before allocation to four weeks of habitual activity (control) or active breaks.
  • Priority Setting Support (SURGE) – this is part of a wider NIHR-funded research partnership. The same day and urgent care priority setting partnership is collecting data and looking for your views as someone who knows the system best. They want to know what you think the important questions are for future research.

Visit their website for ways to get involved: fill out a short survey, sign up to take part in a workshop or send them a WhatsApp voice note.

Finally, an article has been published in BMA Primary Care featuring the findings of a study supported by NW RRDN, on how factors within GP teams can impact job satisfaction, burnout and practice performance.

A full list of available studies in general practice can be found on the NIHR Primary Care Research Hub. You can also get in touch with the team by emailing: nw.rrdn@nihr.ac.uk
