Opportunities for general practice to take part in new studies.
The latest research opportunities from the National Institute for Health Research North West Regional Research Delivery Network (RRDN) are as follows:
- Viaduct Care GP Federation is seeking an experienced and motivated Primary Care Research Project Lead to support the development and delivery of primary care research across Stockport. Closing date is 19 July.
- PADEL Study – PADEL is a multi-centre, individually randomised, open-label, parallel-group superiority randomised controlled trial conducted in English general practices. The study will assess whether pharmacogenomic-guided prescribing improves first-line antidepressant treatment compared with standard prescribing without access to pharmacogenomic results during the initial study period. - CANHEAR – The University of Lancaster is aiming to understand how platinum-based chemotherapy affects hearing function in cancer patients from different socioeconomic backgrounds in the North West of England. Practices are being asked to display a poster advertising the study in their patient waiting rooms.
- Agile CST 9b – This is a Phase II trial, meaning that the trial drug called ALG-097558 is now being tested on a larger population after successful trials in healthy volunteers. ALG-097558 has already been extensively tested in healthy volunteers. The trial drug ALG-097558 is an experimental new medicine for treating COVID-19. Practices will be acting as a PIC site, identifying eligible participants and displaying posters and referring eligible patients to either MRI or Wythenshawe Hospital.
- Social Frailty Screening Toolkit – The aim of the project is to develop and validate a screening tool for social frailty which can: identify people who meet the threshold for social frailty or are at high risk of social frailty; identify the domains of social frailty which should be targeted for intervention; be used in routine practice by practitioners in a range of primary, secondary and public health settings and in social care. To improve generalisability and feasibility of recruiting the required number of participants, the study will be completed in a free-living environment using remote data collection methods.
- PANORAMIC Study – The NIHR-funded and supported PANORAMIC trial, which took place in GP Practices across the North West has reported new findings about the use of Paxlovid. The study teams assessed over 4,200 participants globally in these randomised trials. They found that Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir-ritonavir) does not reduce hospital admissions or deaths in vaccinated adults at higher risk of severe COVID-19, despite helping them recover faster.
